On the grande opening (or so)

There are few opportunities when we have UC celebrities in house. The official opening of a brand-new $190M building (no kidding on the price tag!) falls certainly under the category of 'need to attend' for local dignitaries. And so it was no surprise that the current UC-president (and former head of the Department of Homeland Security) Janet Napolitano (got the job because of her network? academic excellence??), UC-San Diego Chancellor Pradeep Khosla and School of Medicine Dean David Brenner swung by and cut the proverbial (and in reality golden) ribbon (spanned between two poles) to declare the new Biomedical Research Facility 2 Medical Sciences Research Building 'open' for business.
And then the celebration began - UC-San Diego even threw in a buffet with some hors d'oeuvre (purple cheese? seriously?), but alas no champagne.

Impressions of the ribbon, Janet, lab members mingling with the beautiful and powerful, and a picture of the usual speeches..

On a side note - if you see press photos of the event anywhere (still have to find them) - I am front and centre in the first line in the audience during the speeches wearing my 'Dr. Who 50th Anniversary' lanyard that reads 'EXTERMINATE EXTERMINATE YOU ARE AN ENEMY OF THE DALEKS' - slightly awkward.
